What is Special Material?
Special materials are items that cannot be traditionally disposed of in the compost, recycling, or in the
garbage bins. These materials require special handling to be recycled.
The following are considered Special Materials
- Cell Phones / Eye Glasses
- Toner Cartridges
- Electronic Waste
- Metals (Scrap metal)
- Any electronics with a cable or plug attached

Furniture, Metal, Donations, & Re-usables
The annual recovery of materials at UCSF includes:
- 127 tons Scrap metal
- 9 tons Donated materials
- 3.5 tons batteries
- 40 tons E-waste
- 5.5 tons Toner cartridges
- 8 tons Fluorescent light bulb tubes
